TIG Welding workshop
Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (EDT)
This workshop will show basic operation of the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welder. TIG welding is a type of welding that uses an electrical arc to melt two similar metals together while shielded by a non consumable inert gas. This provides a very strong weld with good penetration. A filler material is used to fill complete the weld.
We will go over all of the basic needs for operation of the equipment. By the end of the session each attendee will have learned the following skills
-Safety and theory behind TIG operation
-How to set up the work area and prepare the material
-How to set up the machine and calculate settings
-how to grind a tungsten
-Basic weld types butt, lap, T
-Clean up of machine
-Testing a weld
-How to identify what a weld looks like when it is wrong and how to improve it.
The goal for all attendees is to be able to join two pieces of steel and operate the equipment safely. TIG welding requires patience and practice. This will be enough to get you started. To weld stainless, aluminum, or other more exotic materials, more work will be needed.
Participation requires closed toe shoes, non polyester clothing, a long sleeve shirt and long pants.
The cost includes Consumables (Shield Cup, tungsten, collet, compression nut) for the TIG Welder as well as material to make some MakeIt Labs Xtreme utility keychain (TIG welded bottle opener).
